While national restaurant chains and big-box retailers may play a functional role in a community, they can’t hold firm that community’s sense of identity. Buda Main Street has been launched off of this premise that local businesses preserve Buda’s character both on and off Main Street, where commerce first started in this town, and throughout. By supporting local businesses, revenue is recycled from citizen to citizen where it helps local causes and supports local growth.

Give thanks by donating to the Capital Area Food Bank of Central Texas!

Visitors are encouraged to bring canned foods and donate them in the various white boxes along Main Street while you stroll through the unique antique and specialty shops in downtown, while enjoying food from downtown restaurants.

History of Buda

Buda was born in April 1881. The Austin Statesman printed a last minute reminder in the Saturday morning edition. Here is what the ad read:

"Du Pre – Spend Saturday, April 2, at Du Pre, on International and Great Northern Railroad, fourteen and a half miles from Austin. Great sale on lots, for business or residence. Plenty of shade and water. Bring your families and don’t forget your lunch baskets. Round trip, morning train 9 A.M., back in the evening."

In 1887, postal officials realized that another town in Texas already had first dibs on that name, and Du Pre became Buda.
